Origin and History
Claire is of Latin origin and it is the French form of the name Clara.
Saint Clare of Assisi (1193-1253), was born in Assisi in the year 1193. Her mother was her inspiration for tending to the poor and under-privileged of Assisi. When she was 19, Clare heard St. Francis preaching in the Cathedral of San Rufino, and was so impressed with his enthusiasm and love of Christ that she vowed to meet him in order to learn the secrets of his happiness. When she did, a new Franciscan order began, the Poor Clares, also known as the Poor Ladies of Assisi. In 1212, Clare allowed St. Francis to cut her hair and dress her in the garb of a Franciscan. Through the centuries, St. Clare has inspired countless people, encouraging them to live a simple life with a deep love of Christ.
